April 22, 2011
Just reviewed a book I read a few years ago that would work for Japan on someone’s reading journey around the world.

I have just found your website, and am really enjoying browsing it. I have just done a piece on reading challenges, and have linked to your site. Are there any countries where the writing has surprised you?
Thanks Helen for linking! That’s a really interesting question. Hmmmm. I probably need more time to really do it justice, but off-the-cuff, I think I was the most surprised by Austria’s The Post Office Girl.
What this challenge really brought to light is how many amazing stories and novels are never translated into English. Even though Zweig wrote that story fifty years ago, it only recently made its way to an English-speaking audience. I hope that more people create a demand for more translated work — there are lots of amazing authors out there that we aren’t getting a chance to read!
(Also, Eastern Europe was interesting — the whole bizarre, post-modern, surreal life, thing is huge there.)
